Third Sunday of Lent

“In this season of Lent, the Church invites us to learn to know the Lord Jesus ever better and to live the faith in a consistent way with a lifestyle that expresses the mercy of the Father. It is a commitment that we are called to take on in order to offer to those we meet the concrete sign of God’s closeness.” — Pope Francis

Reflection: The Lenten discipline of almsgiving reminds us we are made for relationship. Through giving more generously we recognize all gifts are from God and are given for the good of the whole community, not just for that of an isolated individual. Almsgiving teaches us to trust God and to depend on divine providence to meet our needs instead of trying to do everything ourselves. How does almsgiving express God’s mercy? Do you have a regular habit of giving out of love and service? What different form of giving might you try during Lent?
